Senior Backend Engineer

We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help build the core estimation engine that powers Basis. You'll own critical systems that process complex cost models, rate calculations, and compliance rules for government contractors across the country.

This role sits at the heart of our platform. You'll design APIs that handle everything from simple T&M quotes to multi-year IDIQ task orders with escalation factors and wrap rates. Performance and correctness matter enormously here: our customers rely on these numbers to win contracts worth millions.

You'll work closely with product and front-end engineers to ship features end-to-end, and you'll have a direct line to customers through our solutions engineering team.

What you’ll do

Design and implement RESTful APIs for the quoting and estimation engine using Python and FastAPI
Build and optimize PostgreSQL schemas for multi-tenant cost data with row-level security
Develop calculation services for labor rates, wrap rates, indirect cost pools, and fee structures
Implement export pipelines for government-formatted pricing documents (SF 1411, cost volumes)
Collaborate with DevOps to maintain zero-downtime deployments and database migration strategies
Participate in architecture reviews and mentor junior engineers on backend best practices

What we’re looking for

5+ years of professional experience building production backend services in Python
Strong proficiency with PostgreSQL, including query optimization and schema design
Experience designing and maintaining RESTful APIs at scale
Familiarity with multi-tenant SaaS architectures and data isolation patterns
Comfort working in a fast-paced startup environment with evolving requirements
Strong written communication skills for async-first collaboration
